We are currently recruiting a dedicated Mechanical Maintenance Engineer to join our Health team at Great Western Hospital in Swindon.
In this essential role, you will deliver safe, compliant, and efficient maintenance of critical mechanical building services across a busy acute hospital. By maintaining essential infrastructure and responding to plant failures, your expertise ensures that patient safety, clinical continuity, and hospital operations continue uninterrupted.
As a Mechanical Technician, your responsibilities will include:
Planned & Reactive Maintenance: Complete planned preventive maintenance (PPM), reactive repairs, inspections, servicing, fault-finding, and testing on mechanical building services.
Plant & Equipment Care: Maintain and repair boilers, pumps, heating and chilled water systems, calorifiers, pressure systems, and ventilation units (air handling units, extract systems, fans, filters).
Emergency Response: Respond promptly to plant failures, alarms, leaks, and service interruptions to protect critical hospital services.
System Documentation: Accurately record maintenance activity, repairs, asset details, and compliance evidence using Computerised Aided Facilities Management (CAFM) systems.
Safety & Compliance: Work safely in strict accordance with permits, risk assessments, healthcare guidance, statutory regulations, and local safe systems of work.
Qualifications: A recognised mechanical apprenticeship or equivalent structured training, supported by a relevant Level 3 qualification (such as NVQ, City and Guilds) in mechanical engineering, plumbing, heating, building services, or HVAC.
Experience: Demonstrable experience maintaining mechanical building services within a commercial, industrial, healthcare, or similarly regulated environment.
Technical Skills: Strong fault-finding and repair capabilities, with a solid understanding of safe systems of work, permit-to-work procedures, and mechanical isolation processes.
IT Literacy: Comfortable using CAFM or maintenance management systems to record activity.
Flexibility: Able and willing to participate in rotating shift patterns, weekend working, and out-of-hours call-out arrangements.
This role requires a Standard DBS check (covering spent and unspent convictions, cautions, reprimands, and warnings under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act), alongside the completion of an Occupational Health Questionnaire.
