Health and Safety in Care Settings

About this course

Covers Care Certificate Standard 13, Health and safety. Five modules cover health and safety responsibilities and risk assessment, moving and assisting and responding to accidents and sudden illness, medicines, healthcare tasks and hazardous substances, fire safety and staying secure, and looking after your own mental health and wellbeing. Five modules, eighteen lessons, around two hours, finishing with an assessment and a SupportiveBridge certificate.

What you'll learn

• By the end of this module, you will be able to name the main health and safety laws that cover care work, explain who is responsible for what, say which tasks need special training, and describe how risks are assessed and reported.
• By the end of this module, you will understand the law and principles behind moving and assisting people and objects safely, the tasks you must not do until you are competent, and what to do when an accident or sudden illness happens.
• By the end of this module, you will be able to describe your employer's agreed ways of working for medicines and healthcare tasks, say which tasks you must not do until you are competent, and explain how hazardous substances are stored, used and disposed of safely.
• By the end of this module, you will be able to explain how fires are prevented and stopped from spreading, describe what to do if there is a fire, and describe how to protect your own security and that of the people you support, including checking who is asking for access.
• By the end of this module, you will be able to describe what affects the mental health and wellbeing of yourself and others in care work, recognise what tends to trigger problems, and know how to find and use support.
