Communication in Care Settings

About this course

This course covers Care Certificate Standard 6, Communication. It looks at why communication matters at work, how to meet each person's communication and language needs, how to reduce barriers, how to keep information confidential in everyday work, and how to get support, handle difficult conversations and keep clear records. Five modules, eighteen lessons, around two hours, finishing with an assessment and a SupportiveBridge certificate.

What you'll learn

• By the end of this module, you will be able to explain why effective communication matters in a care setting and how good and poor communication affect the people you support and the people you work with.
• By the end of this module, you will be able to explain how to find out and meet each person's communication and language needs, wishes and preferences, including the support that the law expects services to provide.
• By the end of this module, you will be able to identify common barriers to communication, in the person, the setting and yourself, and describe practical ways to reduce them, including when a person's capacity to make a decision is in question.
• By the end of this module, you will be able to explain what confidentiality means in care work, when information may be shared, and how to protect people's private information in everyday conversations, messages and records.
• By the end of this module, you will be able to recognise when communication is not working, know where to get support, handle difficult conversations calmly, and record and report what was said clearly and accurately.
