We are proud to partner with BAE Systems to source an ambitious and analytical Summer Intern Material Scientist to join their multidisciplinary Product Assurance Response Centre (PARC) in Great Baddow, Chelmsford.
About the Role
Kick-start your career in materials science with a hands-on 12-week summer internship. Working within PARC, you will support rapid troubleshooting, failure analysis, and product assurance for critical components and production processes, while gaining invaluable exposure to advanced testing and analytical methodologies.
Core Duties & Responsibilities:
Utilize test and analytical equipment to solve technical problems in a timely fashion, supporting colleagues across a wide range of enquiries.
Apply knowledge of material properties, selection, processing, and testing (spanning polymers, metals, ceramics, composites, adhesives, and surface finishes/coatings).
Assist in preparing technical reports, test procedures, process specifications, and vital product documentation.
Engage with advanced analytical techniques such as SEM/EDX, XRF, 3D X-Ray/CT, tensile testing, sample preparation, DSC/TGA, FTIR, TMA, DMA, and NDT techniques (comprehensive in-house training will also be provided).
What We Are Looking For (Requirements & Qualifications):
Academic Background: Must have obtained, or be predicted to obtain, a minimum of a 2:2 in your Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in a STEM subject.
Scientific Mindset: A strong analytical foundation, an aptitude for problem-solving, and a keen interest in materials engineering, quality assurance, or failure analysis.
Security Note: Due to defense and security regulations, all applicants must achieve at least a Baseline Personnel Security Standard. Higher levels of National Security Vetting may apply where required.
