About the School: A Therapeutic & Child-Centred Approach

Located in Halifax, Compass Community School Willow Dean supports boys and girls aged 6 to 17 with Social, Emotional, and Mental Health (SEMH) needs, alongside other special educational needs such as Autism, ADHD, and communication difficulties.

As a trauma- and attachment-informed school, they believe in putting the child at the center of every decision. Through a closely integrated approach involving educators, therapists, parents, and local authorities, they work collaboratively to secure incredible outcomes for their students.

The Role: A Job Like No Other

As a Teaching Assistant here, no two days are ever the same. You will be working with children who require a very special kind of adult—someone who is consistent, flexible, non-judgmental, and deeply resilient. You’ll wear many hats, often switching them at a moment's notice to meet the complex and evolving needs of the students.

Your day-to-day could include:

Supporting teachers in the classroom and managing resources.
Working 1:1 or leading small group sessions.
Accompanying students on trips, visits, and out-of-classroom learning.
Mentoring students during social times, like lunch, to build vital social skills.
Safely managing heightened behaviors and providing a calm, grounded presence.
Getting involved in the fun stuff: science experiments, board games, and creating brilliant classroom displays.
Participating in therapeutic reflection sessions and celebrating every student victory, big or small.
